If there’s one thing you can guarantee the Spanish will always do well, it’s throw a party. And with a celebration in Spain for just about everything (from the weird Baby Jumping Festival to the wonderful Pamplona Bull Running Festival) you really can take your pick. But if you’re heading to the Andalucían city of Granada in May or June and need a little guidance, then let us recommend the perfect start to summer.
The Day of the Cross Festival (known as Las Cruces de Mayo), held every year in Spain for a few days at the beginning of May, blooms into celebration on May 1st with sumptuous city centre retreat, Villa Oniria joining in the festivities. Following suit along with many plazas, houses, gardens and venues across the city, the luxury hotel will be decorating their handsome garden with lots of flowers and a large cross covered in red carnations. And with a dose of traditional Flamenco music to accompany the floral celebrations, guests at the 19th-century townhouse can relax on the roof terrace admiring the coloured creations long into the evening.
Tucked down a small street in the city centre, the minimalist chic charms of the hotel and the cultural exhibits that spring up during the festival, mean a visit here is just the ticket for a perfect early summer getaway. It also makes the ideal crash pad from which to enjoy the other floral displays that decorate the city. And with the celebrations continuing into early June with the Corpus Christi festival at the beginning of the month lasting just over a week, there’s ample opportunity to book yourself a room and experience a real Spanish fiesta.
